In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The September revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Discussions Taking Place

In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several leading political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
